Yarn Stash Busting Challenge

Yarn collection

I’ve come to realise that I own an excessive amount of stuff in many areas of my life, but none are more starkly apparent than my yarn collection.

After 8 years of knitting and crochet, I have amassed a mountain of unfinished projects, ‘that’s pretty but I have no idea what to do with it‘ yarn, and a lot of left overs from finished pieces.

Enough is enough and this fixation on buying more before using up what I already own ends today.

Another box of hidden yarn!

To start this new venture, I first tipped out every ball of yarn I own and weighed them to create a catalogue of my collection.

This was an eye opening experience to revisit yarn I had completely forgotten about and confront how much I have squirrelled away around my house and hidden in boxes at my storage unit.

I even weighed all my scrappy bits and put them in a special bowl ready to be used up in whatever project I dream up.

And after a day of weighing the results were in…

In total my yarn collection amasses to a whopping 5789g.

This is equivalent to 116 balls 50g balls of yarn… ooft…

So what am I going to do about it?

Well, as of September 2026 I have enforced a self imposed ban on buying any new balls of yarn and set an aim of using up every ball of yarn I own in the next year.

Am I delusional for thinking this if possible? Probably, but we all have to start somewhere and this is my first step to recognising my contribution to an endless cycle of buying rather than shopping in my own belongings first.

My plan is to do monthly check-ins where I show what projects I have completed and weigh how much yarn they have used up.

If you are a fellow yarn hoarder like myself, I hereby invite you to join me on this journey and shop through your own stash before rushing out to buy something new.

Let me know if you have any project ideas that would eat through a large amount of yarn!

See you at the start of October for the first check in 🙂
