Once again I’m delving into my fabric offcuts and looking for projects to turn them into. With my upcoming Derbyshire Makes stall, I’ve been thinking about making decorations, and this material wreath was the perfect way to use up a collection of fabric scraps whilst also making a colourful creation!

This wire ring base has had many lives as Christmas wreaths, but now it has a new destiny- a rag wreath!

I started by cutting the fabric offcuts into strips measuring approximately 4cm x 20cm.

I then tied them one by one onto the inner metal ring. I tied them in a way so that both fabric strip ends point outwards.

The fabric strips need to be tied closely together to create tension between them and ensure the fabric stays in position.

After filling the inner ring, I then tied material strips to the outer ring. These fabric strips stick out further and create a lovely layered effect.

To hang the wreath, I took a seam cut off from a recycled bed sheet and tied it to the top of the metal ring. I then tied the ends together into a bow to create a loop to hang the wreath from.

And just like that, the colourful fabric wreath is complete!
This simple project is a great way to use up fabric offcuts! It can also be made seasonal by handpicking certain colours or textures.
Another joy is that it’s reversible! When Christmas rolls around the fabric can be removed and used for another project and the metal ring reused to make a floral wreath.
I’d love to hear if you have any ideas for turning scrap fabric into beautiful decorations! If you do, please do leave them in the comments below 🙂
