Let’s turn those old T-shirts which are too tired to be donated into something useful. T-shirt yarn is brilliant for crochet, weaving and making rag rugs. It is also a super quick and easy process and a great way to save these fabrics from landfill.
Materials:
- Old cotton T-shirt
- Scissors
Method:
1. Lay your t-shirt out on the floor and flatten out any wrinkles.

2. Carefully cut off the bottom hem. Then, cut across from one armpit to the other. Remove the hem and top of the t-shirt so you are left with just the middle tube section.

3. It is time to cut the fabric into strips.
Evenly cut lines every 2.5cm (this width may vary depending on what you want to use your t-shirt yarn for) through both layers of fabric from one side fold to the other. Stop cutting about 1.5cm from the second side fold as we want to keep all the fabric attached.
Do not worry if your strips aren’t exactly even!

4. Pick up your fabric and lay it out so that the uncut side fold now sits on the top facing you.
It may help to place a piece of paper between the two layers of fabric so the top layer is easier to identify.

5. We are now going to make diagonal cuts to make one continuous piece of fabric.
First, cut from the outside edge diagonally up to where you stopped cutting your first strip. This is the end of your yarn.
The next cut will go diagonally from the top of the previous strip to the top of the next strip. Repeat along all of the strips.
When you reach the last strip, cut diagonally to the edge.

6. Go along the yarn and gently pull each section of it between your hands. This will cause it to roll and hide any rough edges.

7. Wind your t-shirt yarn into a ball. It is now ready to use!
