Small and medium trivet

As I explore the world of making fabric yarn, my mind instantly wanders to what I can use this yarn for.

This simple crochet pattern is the perfect way to put your beautiful new fabric yarn to use and make something practical for your home.

This pattern can easily be scaled up or down to fit your pot size but the general premise always stays the same: crochet a square then add a colourful border with the final optional step of adding a hook to hang it from– It’s as simple as that!

Small and medium trivet

I made a small size which is basically a large coaster, a medium which would suit milk pans, and a large for most saucepans.

Sizes: small (medium, large)

This pattern is written using UK crochet terminology.

Materials:

  • Recycled bed linen
  • Scissors
  • 8mm and 4mm crochet hook
  • DK cotton yarn
  • Tapestry needle

Instructions

1. Cut your bed linen into 2cm wide strips then attach the strips to make a ball of fabric yarn. Since this project is very small you won’t need that much of this.

2. Time to crochet:

  • Row 1: Ch 10 (13, 16) using the fabric yarn and 8mm crochet hook.
  • Row 2: ch1 (does not count as 1st st) and turn work, dc into each st
  • Row 3-10(13,16): repeat row 2 until you have made the same number of rows as the number ch’s in row 1.
    • You now have a square!
  • Cut yarn and weave in ends
  • If your square is curling, you could cover it with a towel and gently iron it on a low heat.

3. Adding a border:

  • Attach the cotton yarn to one of the corners using the 4mm crochet hook.
  • Ch2 (counts as first st), htr into the same st, 2htr into each st to next corner. In the corner work 2htr, ch2, 2htr. Repeat this sequence until you reach your first st.
  • Sl st into the 1st st, cut the yarn and weave in the ends

Optional Hook:

  • To add a hook, attach the cotton yarn to one of the corners and ch 16. Turn the ch and work a dc into each of the sts.
  • Cut the yarn and use the end to sew the chunky chain into a loop.

Your beautiful trivet is now complete and ready for use!
