As a long term crocheter I have acquired a lot of yarn… and I mean a lot. Every project I make seems to leave me with an awkwardly small amount of yarn left over. I decided it was time to use up those yarn ends, supplemented by those untouched skeins that hide in the back of my cupboard, and create something beautiful!

This is where we welcome in the Granny Square Scrappy Blanket.

This blanket includes every colour under the sun using whatever double knit (DK) yarn was left in my cupboard. Each square has a unique colour combination decided upon as I made them – no colour combination is too wacky! It’s all down to personal preference.

It’s a great way to use up scrap yarn and use up colours you’re not so keen on (we all have those balls we’ve pushed to the bottom of the bag for years!). Once mixed into the blanket, the diversity of colours only adds to the blanket’s beauty!

With no set colour plan, it’s a creative adventure I invite you to try for yourself!

The finished blanket dimensions are approximately : 137cm x 164cm
54 inches x 64.5 inches

Materials:

  • 4.5mm crochet hook
  • DK yarn – as many scraps, odds and ends as you can find!
  • 200g of one colour for borders (I chose white)

Method:

  1. Make 120 Granny squares
    • Each square needs 4 rounds on colour then the final round in your chosen border colour (I chose white)
    • Top Tip – tie in the ends as you go or you will have a big job at the end!
  1. Block all your squares
    • Blocking your squares ensures they are all the same size making it much easier to sew them together and get a neat end shape.
  1. Sew the blanket together into 12 rows of 10 squares
    • Lay them out on the floor and experiment with the order
    • I aimed to have no similar squares next to each other but you could create a pattern if you like!
    • I used mattress stitch to sew them together
  1. Adding a border
    • Add 3 rounds of granny square cluster stitches around the entire blanket then a final round of single crochets just to tie it all together.

And Voila! A yarn stash busting granny square blanket to adorn your home.
